MASH is a series owned by 20th Century Fox and is a fictional story of characters who served at a 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) when the Korean War was going on. MASH is a media franchise. The series has been based upon the original 8055th MASH and stars Hawkeye Pierce as the primary character. Later on, other characters also appear in the series and are set after the end of the war. Most versions of this series involve some kind of drama and black comedy and involve medicines because most of the characters in the series are nurses and doctors.
The series later on ended up on 4th September, 1986 because of a concluding decision made by Trapper John. And even in 2010, there have been no more attempts to continue and revamp the series. But there have been numerous fans of this series worldwide and 20th Century Fox has been able to sustain selling this series on DVD in a successful fashion.
MASH series started with a novel MASH: A Novel about three army doctors, which was written by author Richard Hooker taking into consideration his own experiences during the 8055th MASH as a surgeon. This novel was into publication during 1968 and has many sequels to it. The film MASH featured in 1970 was originally taken from the novel and the film was directed by Robert Altman with the main stars as Donald Sutherland (acting as Hawkeye Pierce) and Elliott Gould (acting as Trapper John McIntyre).
MASH series, which was a spin-off of the book, ran from 1972 to 1983 and was almost three times longer than the actual war which it described. The main character Rogers left the series after the third season and Mike Farrell (as B. J. Hunnicutt) replaced him. The series was a very popular one and had a renowned franchise. It was ranked 25th in TV Guides 50 greatest TV shows of all time.
A play by Tim Kelly was later on release in 1973 which was based on the original book. It was release in one-act and full versions. It was occasionally produced by community theatre and high school theatre companies.
